Sun Country airline will increase its operation to Liberia to 53 flights

High season:

  • It is an increase of 15 flights between December and March from Minneapolis and Saint Paul to Daniel Oduber airport.
  • ICT augurs one of the most important high seasons in recent years.

The US airline Sun Country announced that it will increase its operation from 38 to 53 flights from the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul (in Minnesota, USA) to Liberia, Guanacaste, for the high season, between December and March 2019.

With the increase of these 15 flights, the airline will add a total of 53 flights distributed as follows: 6 in December 2018; 14 in January ,15 in February and 18 in March 2019.
“This increase in operations of the Sun Country company reflects the continued interest and confidence of the US market in the destination of Costa Rica. According to the projections, this will be one of the most important high seasons we have had in recent years. We hope it will bring many benefits for all the communities, “said the Minister of Tourism, María Amalia Revelo.
During the winter, heavy snow and low temperatures hit Minnesota, so it could be extremely attractive for residents of that state to fly to Liberia during the Costa Rican dry season.
Minneapolis-Saint Paul is the largest metropolitan area in the state of Minnesota, with a population of over 3 million.

The Head of Attraction of Airlines of the ICT, Hermes Navarro, said that “our intention is to continue growing gradually and sustained tourism from North America to both international airports.”

He explained that in Juan Santamaría airport “we see an increase in arrivals from North America of 6.5% in May and 7.5% in June. In the specific case of tourists from the United States, the percentage increased from 8.2% in May to 9.2% in June.”

Meanwhile, at the Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, visitation from the three markets of North America (United States, Canada and Mexico) grew by 8.6% in May and 11.9% in June.

In 2017, 525,661 international arrivals were registered in Costa Rica at the Daniel Oduber airport, of which 74.7 percent came from the United States of America. From January to June of the current year, the number rises to 331,187, according to data from the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration processed by the I.C.T.
